About firmware updates

The firmware for all our current products can be upgraded by playing a special PCM wav file into it. It looks like a regular PCM audio file, but it contains no audio, just specially formatted firmware data. Details on how to play these update files into your product are contained in the corresponding product manuals.

All our Dream products and the Edelweiss DAC and Player have two processors and each can be updated individually with their own wav file (The MPS-X and USB-X only have one processor). The loaded and currently running firmware versions in your product can be displayed on the front panel (check manual) whereby the left most number indicates the version of the main processor and the second number indicates the version of the signal processor.

Updates to the main processor contain mostly small features, whereas updates for the signal processor can be performance improvements.

Each processor has a backup firmware so that if an update goes bad or is interrupted, the processor can revert back to this backup firmware and you can start the update process again. This backup version cannot be overwritten and always has an even version number. Odd version numbers are user upgradeable.

Each processor performs an extensive authentication process before loading any update file and so it is impossible to load a file that is not intended for the specific product that you are playing the file into.

As with any update procedure for the field, there is always a certain risk that things can go wrong and that the system cannot recover by itself. We have done everything possible with the available technology to prevent any processor from becoming disabled with a failed update attempt, but no system is 100% error proof. With this we only recommend upgrading your system if you need a certain new feature or other improvement as described for each version below. If you are not convinced you need it, we recommend to NOT do the upgrade, but rather wait for the next one that might be more useful for you.
